Luna Moth Life Cycle

A cycle is like a pattern, it is something that repeats again and again. My Dad taught us in Art class to look for patterns in all living things and to use them in our artwork. Cycles exist in the environment all around us. The seasons repeat in a cycle, Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, and the water on our planet evaporates and precipitates in a cycle. All living things have a life cycle, they start as eggs or seeds, then grow until they make more eggs or seeds to begin the cycle again. Last week we went to the Butterfly Garden at the Science Museum and learned about the life cycles of butterflies and other insects and plants. The butterflies start as eggs, then hatch into caterpillars or larva, then they make their cocoon and become a pupa, and then they become a butterfly and start again. Even though they all have the same life cycle they are all very different. Each one is like a beautiful piece of art.

What do caterpillars do?

Nothing much but chew and chew.

What do caterpillars know?

Nothing much but how to grow.

They just eat what by and by

will make them be a butterfly.

But that is more than I can do

however much I chew and chew.
